In a perfect world, Jerry Manuel still envisions Mike Pelfrey and John Maine as "a two and three." That is, he views them legitimately as the Mets' second and third starters - maybe even next season if no other top-flight pitchers are added - to fall in behind ace Johan Santana.
But 2009 has been anything but a perfect year for the Mets on numerous levels, and the travails of Maine and Pelfrey only have added to the season-long misery.
The two hurlers took positive steps yesterday, with Maine finally closing on a return to the Mets for the first time since June and Pelfrey allowing one run on five hits over a season-high eight innings in a 4-2 win over the Cubs in Flushing. Continue
