The note that hung in the Philadelphia clubhouse Friday night was a printout of an e-mail from Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt that read, in part, "The Mets know you are better than they are." On the other side of Shea, Jerry Manuel described the need to finish strong against the arch-rival Phillies as "We have some things we have to confront and deal with and get behind us."
The reminders of the Mets' monumental collapse last season - when they blew a seven-game NL East lead over Philadelphia with 17 to play and missed the playoffs - were everywhere. The game turned out to be just one more, as the Phillies prevailed, 3-0, before 48,302 fans who no doubt left thinking about last season's meltdown. Continue
